We all have 24 hours a day. Billionaires and those who run multiple businesses simultaneously all have the same amount of time that you and I do. They just do different things in their 24 hours. How can we accomplish more than we do now, with time to spare?Leverage.

I was referred to the new book by Napoleon Hill, titled “Outwitting the Devil,”written in 1938 and only printed this year. It was blocked until now, and that story alone should get your attention. I cannot recommend it highly enough. A lot of what he writes about challenges and illuminates principles we might think we are working with in a new way, and it is exactly right for this time in world affairs. It’s not religious – Hill simply uses analogies, stories, and imaginary conversations to illustrate his point most effectively. I mention this book because, while I am only 2/3 of the way through it, it prompted this article.

Years ago, a well-known speaker said that if you only spend twenty minutes a day listening to the right audio books in your car, you would have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in a two years. When people whine that they “don’t have time to read books,” it really means that they don’t WANT to MAKE the time to read books. By shuffling, delegating, subcontracting, and reevaluating what we currently do with our precious, never-to-be-repeated time, its amazing how much extra time we can find.

Perhaps we’re just so used to drifting along and ignoring important things in favour of urgent things, procrastinating, making excuses, and hiding within our comfort zone, that we don’t CARE enough to take another look at what we are spending our time on. Business owners who expect to earn big money but waste that unique resource of time on minimum wage activities are just making fools of themselves. But that’s all theory. Let me share a simple exercise with you.

Imagine that, if you didn’t read Mr. Hill’s book within a week, you would be KILLED. Think you’d find the time, now? Imagine that, if you read the book within a week, you would receive a cheque for a million dollars. Would you manage to read it within a week? What changed? Your level of motivation. Suddenly, you could find the time that didn’t seem available before.

Your every action, choice, word, and thought is either taking you towards your major, predetermined, exciting, measurable, written goals, or away from them. But of course, if you don’t have specific, time- related goals, if your WHY isn’t big enough, if there’s no urgency, just keep on drifting along the road of mediocrity, compromise, and distraction, like 98% of people. Shoppenhauer wrote, “The common man is not concerned about the passage of time, the man of talent is driven by it.”

In business, the best time and money leverage you’ll ever find is in Joint Ventures. That’s why I love JV’s. Take this video, for example. It cost me nothing to have it made, and it will work hard for me for years on the Internet. 58 minutes of explanation, elaboration, rationalization, demonstration, and elucidation – over and over and over again. I pay other people to do things that I’m not good at or that I can’t justify using my valuable time for. I use technology, delegation, and leverage to free my time up for important things that only I can do, and things that I want to do. I don’t allow a cell phone to control my life. I am in charge of my life – it’s my choice.

Life is more exciting when you’re doing things that are leading you inexorably towards your enthralling goals. Life is more satisfying and fulfilling when you do things you love and care about and live your passion. It’s not fun cleaning toilets or helping other people achieve their goals while you slog away, violating your values and earning a small income with no future prospects. We are all prepared to do the hard things when necessary, but it shouldn’t be a way of life.

William Penn wrote, “Time is what we want most, but what we use worst.” let’s reevaluate our goals and how we spend our time, look at our options, and make some important changes. The return on investment is wonderful. I coach my business owner clients to use their time optimally, and and the results are stupendous.

“Time = life; therefore, waste your time and waste of your life, or master your time and master your life” – Alan Lakein
